I am so excited to announce the web publication of my latest project:  Ubuntu:  an absolute beginner’s guide, brought to you by the great folks at Make Use Of.com.  Thanks so much to my fabulous editor, Justin Pot, for approaching me with this project last fall and bringing together all of the details that went into the final product.  It looks awesome!

Curious about Ubuntu, but not sure where to start? Start here: “Ubuntu: An Absolute Beginner’s Guide”, by author Courtney Loo, is the latest free guide from MakeUseOf and will teach you everything you need to know about Ubuntu in easy-to-understand language.

Ubuntu is a free/libre, open-source computer operating system with 20 million users worldwide. But it’s also so much more than that: it is an ethos, a collaborative project and, first and foremost, Ubuntu is a community of people.

Migrating to a new operating system can be daunting, especially when faced with unfamiliar words like ‘FLOSS’, ‘command line interface’ and ‘kernel’. Many people are intimidated by the technical jargon of a non-commercial operating system and believe it’s too advanced for them. Well, that is simply not true. Ubuntu is easy to install and simple to use.   Best of all: it’s completely FREE!

Ubuntu Software Center Guide

In Ubuntu, Writing on January 15, 2012 by Courtney Loo

After many months of collaboration with Randall Ross and Charlene Tessier of  Ubuntu Vancouver LoCo, I finally completed a comprehensive guide on the ever useful, ever evolving, Ubuntu Software Center (version 11.04).  Although I’m posting about this in January 2012, the guide first came out in September of 2011 was a wonderful experience for me and my first introduction in to the world of Ubuntu.  Hopefully something can be written for the next Long-Term Support release in April of 2012 since the Ubuntu Software Center has had some major design overhauls after the latest release of 11.10.

From the guide:

What is Ubuntu Software Center?

Ubuntu Software Center (USC) is an application that allows you to obtain, install, and remove software in a single window.  With USC, you can manage all of your software needs without ever having to launch an Internet browser or wonder whether the software you download is safe and compatible with your operating system.

When to use Ubuntu Software Center

Use Ubuntu Software Center when you want to:

  • Search for software
  • Test drive software without installation or purchase
  • Install software
  • Remove software
  • Purchase software
  • Rate and review software
  • Keep track of your installation, update, and removal history
